How You Can Quickly Solve Complex Problems With The Drill Down
Drill Down is a fast, easy method to break down complex problems into increasingly smaller bits. Once you see how quick it is to do this, you'll make this part of your daily problem solving toolkit.

How Drill Down Works: Grab a large sheet of blank paper, flipchart paper or work on a whiteboard.

Start by writing your problem down on the left side of the page or board.
Next, ask yourself what makes up the next level of detail of this problem. Record your answers to the write of your first statements. Link the problem areas with arrows.

Sample questions can be:

  • What contributes to the problem?
  • What is information relating to the problem?
  • What may be causing this to happen?
  • What questions does that bring up?

Continue to ask questions so that you can completely understand the contributing factors to each sub-level of the problem.

Once you reach a stopping point, you may need to do more research and investigation to further understand the situation.

This process helps you understand contributing factors to any problem. This can help you understand a complex situation into bite-size pieces. Often with this greater understanding, you may see a deeper or broader context of the problem. With this view, you will see where you need further information and understand specific actions that you need to take
